Before her first birthday, Helen Keller lost both her sight and her hearing. And, what she learned as a result was that one’s abilities are not destined by nor determined by what is lacking. Rather one’s abilities rest in one’s strength to look inward and realize, ‘personal success can be achieved by everyone.’ How we get there will be different for everyone.
In 1904, Helen became the first person who was deaf and blind to have graduated from Radcliffe College. She authored numerous books and spent much of her adult life raising money for others like her. Helen was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the United State’s highest civilian award, by President Lyndon B Johnson in 1964. A year later, she was elected to the Women’s Hall of Fame at the New York World’s Fair.

“Do not think of today’s failures, but of the success that may come tomorrow. You have set yourself a difficult task, but you will succeed if you persevere: and you will find a joy in overcoming obstacles. Remember, no effort that we make to attain something beautiful is ever lost.”
